P564 CEEFAX 1 564 Tue 08 Jul 19:31/22 —————————— 1/8 WHAT'S HOT & WHAT'S NOT —— new single —————————————————————————OASIS — D'YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN? (Creation) The boys are back in town and already the vultures are circling. In fairness, this is not what you would call classic Oasis, but you can't write them off on the strength of one song. The Wonderwall riff is regurgitated in a near-seven minute psychedelic journey which features throaty vocals from Liam and the usual indulgent guitar solo from big bruv. Not unlike the Stone Roses' comeback, this will definitely be a huge hit but maybe not one of their most memorable. —————————— by Chris Charles ———————————Showbiz 540 Telepoll 509Top 40 565Top 40 Lottery Reviews Main Menu
P564 CEEFAX 1 564 Tue 08 Jul 19:32/08 —————————— 2/8 WHAT'S HOT & WHAT'S NOT —— new single —————————————————————————OASIS — D'YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN? (Creation) Ssh, don't tell anyone, but they may have picked the wrong one here D'You Know What I Mean, at nearly seven minutes long, is more akin to an album track, while the upbeat Stay Young appears to be the more obvious choice. Oasis, like the Spice Girls, could release a nursery rhyme recital and it would nestle comfortably in the No 1 slot for at least three months. But if they persist in ruining classics like David Bowie's Heroes, it could be Ashes to Ashes before they know it. —————————— by Chris Charles ———————————Showbiz 540 Telepoll 509Top 40 565Top 40 Lottery Reviews Main Menu
P564 CEEFAX 1 564 Tue 08 Jul 19:32/41 —————————— 3/8 WHAT'S HOT & WHAT'S NOT —— new single —————————————————————————MICHAEL JACKSON — HISTORY (Epic) Is there no end to the spin offs from the ancient HIStory project? For all its glossy production, this "special" mix still manages to sound curiously dated. Eighties-style synthetic handclaps dominate, and the cramped production fails to create the sense of space found in most late 90s dance music. Unfortunately, Jacko's songs have declined in quality as his videos have grown ever more lavish. Maybe it's time to re-think priorities. —————————— by Nigel Packer ————————————Showbiz 540CBBC Text 500Top 40 565Top 40 Lottery Reviews Main Menu
P564 CEEFAX 1 564 Tue 08 Jul 19:31/40 —————————— 4/8 WHAT'S HOT & WHAT'S NOT —— new single —————————————————————————MASSIVE ATTACK — RISING SON (Circa) Atmospheric and bewitching, this one washes around you like the murky waves of the Bristol Channel. The original trip hoppers have never been ones to do things in a hurry, and Rising Son sloshes along at a leisurely pace even by their slo-mo standards. It's a sinister affair, with Velvet Underground samples and a brooding sense that it may leap from your speakers at any moment. All in all about as much fun as you can have while feeling seasick. —————————— by Nigel Packer ————————————Showbiz 540CBBC Text 500Top 40 565Top 40 Lottery Reviews Main Menu
P564 CEEFAX 1 564 Tue 08 Jul 19:41/11 —————————— 5/8 WHAT'S HOT & WHAT'S NOT —— new single —————————————————————————R KELLY — GOTHAM CITY (Zomba) Tribute to Batman's stomping ground from a man with superhero delusions of his own, judging by the title of his recent number one single. With a slow-build arrangement and gospel choir joining in at the end, Gotham City sounds much like any other big number from a Hollywood film. It also feels like a thin idea dressed in an overblown production and cynically sold as something worthwhile. A perfect soundtrack for the film it comes from, in fact. —————————— by Nigel Packer ————————————Showbiz 540 Telepoll 509Top 40 565Top 40 Lottery Reviews Main Menu
P564 CEEFAX 1 564 Tue 08 Jul 19:24/22 —————————— 6/8 WHAT'S HOT & WHAT'S NOT —— new singles ————————————————————————TRACEY LEE — THE THEME (IT'S PARTY TIME) (Universal) Tracey, strange as it may seem, is all MAN (and quite a big lad he is too). It's Party Time has apparently been THE party anthem in the States this year. A nicely chilled hip-hop tune and pretty impressive for a debut but, to be honest, Tracey sounds as if he's set to leave the party and hit the sack! DUBSTAR — NO MORE TALK (Food) Serene Sarah's sugar-sweet vocals perch nicely on top of a Flamenco-style dance beat. Shame about Glastonbury, though. —————————— by Chris Charles ———————————PopQuiz 562 Telepoll 509Movies 541Top 40 Lottery Reviews Main Menu
P564 CEEFAX 1 564 Tue 08 Jul 19:22/24 —————————— 7/8 WHAT'S HOT & WHAT'S NOT —— new album ——————————————————————————JOHN LYDON — PSYCHO'S PATH (Virgin) "Ever get the feeling you'vi been cheated?", declared our John once, in the days when he was Rotten. Those sentiments may well be echoed by any young whippersnapper buying this on the strength of "Open Up" and his dad's old Sex Pistols tape. Problems arise when John stops wailing and snarling and tries to SING. He redeems himself on the blazing Sun and later enlists the help of the Chemical Brothers, Leftfield and Moby in a vain bid to crank things up. —————————— by Chris Charles ———————————Showbiz 540 Telepoll 509Top 40 565Top 40 Lottery Reviews Main Menu
P564 CEEFAX 1 564 Tue 08 Jul 19:41/00 —————————— 8/8 WHAT'S HOT & WHAT'S NOT —— new album ——————————————————————————SYSTEM SEVEN — GOLDEN SECTION (Big Life) Don't put this on at work — like I did — you won't keep your eyes open. Not that it's boring — quite the opposite in fact — it's just a bit TOO mind-numbing for a Friday afternoon after a tomato juice or two in the bar! Steve Hillage and co have been doing this dancambient thing for some time now and Golden Section is incredibly the Seven's sixth album. They do it pretty well, too, and if couch potatoism is your forte, send someone down to buy it for you! —————————— by Chris Charles ———————————PopQuiz 562The Vibe 561Movies 541Top 40 Lottery Reviews Main Menu
