The news that the actor inside the purple suit is to go had raised fears for the future of his character and of his co-stars La La, Dipsy and Po. But a BBC statement said: "Tinky Winky is alive and well in Teletubbyland". The children's show has achieved cult status since its launch in March. The actor inside the tall, purple Teletubby's suit has been sacked after the programme-makers criticised his "interpretation of the role". Dave Thompson, 37, says he did his best for the programme but suspects his voice may have been the problem — his was the only one to be dubbed.
