P119 CEEFAX 119 Fri 23 Dec 22:49/57       The Home Secretary has announced new regulations covering the issue and use of firearms bu police. Mr Brittan said that there will be more emphasis on the temperament, background and personal circumstances of those applying to be firearms officers. Authority for police to use guns will have to be given by a police commander. The changes come in the waSt of a decision by the Police Complaints Board not to bring disciplinary charges against two officers involved in the shooting by mistake of Steven Waldorf. P119 CEEFAX 119 Fri 23 Dec 22:37/33       Seven Canadians and a US citizen have been arrested in Toronto and charged in connection with an alleged plot to overthrow the Guyana government. Police said the Canadians planned to buy arms and pass them to a 20 man team who were to kill Guyana's President Forbes Burnham and members of his cabinet. The eight have been charged with conspiracy to possess prohibited weapons. They were detained by officers posing as gangsters who sold them weapons and ammunition.
P119 CEEFAX 119 Fri 23 Dec 22:18/08       Mrs Thatcher has assured the Falkland islanders that the sovereignty of the islands is not negotiable. In a Christmas message broadcast by BBC External Services tonight, she said "I am not negotiating the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands with anyone. "They are British. You, the people, have a right to determine your own future. That is not negotiable. So you can look forward to the New Year knowing that is absolutely all right". Mrs Thatcher urged the islanders to look after "our boys - in the armed forces" and give them "a terrific Christmas".

It will be parked outside the London store tomorrow, in the hope that people will remember seeing the original. Police are trying to build up a photographic record of events around the time of the blast and would like to hear from anyone who took pictures in the area. P119 CEEFAX 119 Fri 23 Dec 22:39/58       A man has been jailed for a hoax bomb call which diveuted police from Harrods after last Saturday's explosion. Gary Coomber, 26, a cleaner with London Transport, was sent to prison for three months by magistrates at Harrow. They heard that Coomber, of "tanmori, Middlesex, telephoned the emergency services with an Irish accent after hearing about the Harrods bomb. Hi said there was a bomb at Debenhams. Police said they diverted services from Harrods to various Debenhams stores. Coomber's call was traced. Newsreel continues in a moment
P119 CEEFAX 119 Fri 23 Dec 22:14/32       Four men have appeared in court in Glasgow on charges of conspiring to commit acts of terrorism for the Ulster Volunteer Force. They were remanded in custody, accused of acquiring 132kg of gelignite and a quantity of detonator cord from a mine at Shorts. The charge also bllegjd that they met at various addresses in Scotland and in Liverpool to conspire to cause acts of terrorism in the UK. Birmingham police have released a London student detained under the Per6jntion of Terrorism Act.
P119 CEEFAX 119 Fri 23 Dec 22:40/08       The condition of a police officer injured in the Harrods bombing has deteriorated. Inspector Stephen Dodd, 3), underwent an operation to remove a blood clot from his brain on Wednesday. But a spokesman for the Central Middlesex Hospital said Inspector Dodd's condition deteriorated last night. The funerals took place today of two of the Harrods bombing victims. Police Sergeant Noel Lane was cremated at Croydon, south London. Journalist Mr Philip Geddes was buried at Barrow-in- Furness, Cumbria.
P119 CEEFAX 119 Fri 23 Dec 22:13/03       The bank workers' union has said that more than 2,500 banks were closed or seriously affected by a protest by counter staff. The union, which had told its members to walk out at noon, said the banks themselves had closed down many sub- offices and transferred staff to parent offices to keep them open. But the Banking Information Service said only 110 out of more than 11,260 "Big Five" bank branches in England and Wales had closed at noon. The workers were protesting about the loss of a half-day Christmas holiday.

Japanese foreign mjnistry officials said Britain considered that a visit in the New Year would not be timely. The Invincible was recently refused dry dock facilities in Australia because her commander would not say whether the ship was carrying nuclear weapons. P119 CEEFAX 119 Fri 23 Dec 22:12/13       The Defence Secretary, Mr Michael Heseltine, has been in Beirut visiting the British peace-keeping force. He spent an hour at the troops' base at Hadath, in the southern suburbs of the city, and then went on to meet Lebanese government officials and staff at the British Embassy. Mrs Thatcher was cheered by hundreds of women as she walked through the town centre at Newtonards, in County Down. She also visited Armagh city and visited an Ulster Defence Regiment base Mrs Thatcher, who was accompanied by her husband, said that freedom and the rule of law could not be maintained but for the work of the security forces, supported by the people. Democracy was the rejection of violence, she declared.
P119 CEEFAX 119 Fri 23 Dec 22:16/01       Two Canadian missionaries captured by Angolan rebels last month have bedn released. Five Britons are among other foreigners expected to be released within the next few days. The Canadians, both women, were flown out on a Red Cross charter flight to Pretoria, South Africa. The Angolan rebel movement UNITA had said earlier that all foreign captives except Czechoslovaks would be handed over to the Red Cross as a goodwill gesture for Christmas. P119 CEEFAX 119 Fri 23 Dec 22:20/48  X      SCUNTHORPE REJECT APPEAL Scunthorpe United football club have turned down an appeal from the cricket authorities not to pick Ian Botham for two games over Christmas. It is feared he could injure himself before England's tour to Fiji, New Zealand and Pakistan. But Scunthorpe say Botham must make the final decision on playing. Donald Carr, secretary of the Test and County Cricket Board, will make a last appeal to Bojham tomorrow. "I know Ibm has got himself fit and enjoys playing soccer for Scunthorpe, but his first priority must be to the tour team," he said.

Injuries are as rare for the world's number one as defeats, but she has had to pull out of next month's Virginia Slims tournament in Washington. An organiser said that the Czech born American has withdrawn because of "extreme exhaustion and a sore left shoulder".
