Thousands of children in the 1930s lived and slept rough, ignored by the authorities - most were escaping poverty and violence at home, or running from orphanages. His fractures are so severe that he is at risk of losing his hands - he is admitted to hospital in order to have his wrists pulled back into position and set in plaster.
