It began in the same year as Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em and Are You Being Served. But Last of the Summer Wine has outlived them both. Quite how it has managed to last 26 years is a mystery to some. It has the same jokes, same characters and same old settings, say the critics. But that is exactly why 6-8 million people tune in every Sunday night for a slice of Yorkshire whimsy. It's as predictable as the seasons in the Yorkshire Dales. ——————————————————————————————————1/5—— Vote in the TV Plus poll >>>> FREE KIDS ACTIVITIES AT PONTIN'S! JOIN THE PARTY! Mellow, witty dialogue has been the stock in trade of Last of the Summer Wine for 26 years. Here's an early example: a Clegg: "How are you to know when you're dead?" Blamire: "Well, you're supposed to take the hint when they bury you." Now, sadly, Compo has gone. Bill Owen, the show's longest serving member, died on Monday from cancer. Some of the cast say the show should be axed. Others want it to carry on. ——————————————————————————————————2/5—— Vote in the TV Plus poll >>>> MAKE NEW FRIENDS GO TO PAGE 395 NOW! Even the cast seem split over whether Last of the Summer Wine should carry on. Kathy Staff, 71, who plays Nora Batty, suggested it should end after they finish filming the next series. Three episodes are already complete. But Peter Sallis, 78, who plays Clegg, said: "It's a very strong team. Although one part of me agrees with Kathy, the BBC and scriptwriter Roy Clarke have the means to continue." ——————————————————————————————————3/5—— Vote in the TV Plus poll >>>> CRICKET HEADLJNES p450 ITV TV 2000 Films Films on Move 24 Hours
