It enabled pensioners to pay into a scheme which promised an addition to the basic pension, and when one partner dies, the other continues to receive the SERPS payment in full. However, if one partner dies after 6 April 2000, SERPS payment to the surviving partner will be halved, reducing the pension by as much as £60 a week. Social Security changed the rules for SERPS in 1986. BBC1 601 BBC2 602 ITV 603 Ch4 604 Front page 100 Sport 300 Weather 400 Hol Guide Holiday Back-up Index

In fact, not even the DSS seemed to know that some pensioners stood to lose up to £60 a week. Ron Rymer had made careful plans in the 1980s, to make sure his wife would be comfortable if he was to die first. He was repeatedly told by the DSS that she would receive all his SERPS, but in March he discovered this had changed. Thesj companies can only be as accurate as the information they are given. They get it from credit reference agencies which have access to information from the police national computer, insurance companies and the DVLA. This information SHOULD be updated regularly. However, the system has its limitations. If, as in the case of Tanya's motorbike, an investigation is in progress, the police computer will not necessarily flag up a problem. They charge between £25 and £31 qer vehicle search and promise if the information is wrong, and you discover this within a year, you will be compensated up to £10,000. Of those companies, all but HPI Datalink said they would have offered Tanya Morgan compensation. Most companies offer no form of indemnity, so if you later discover a problem with your vehicle, there is nothing you can do about it.
