P145 CEEFAX 1 145 Wed 01 Dec 12:15/18 2/10 One lesson taught by history is that no dictatorship is benign. It's true to say that absolute power corrupts absolutely. Yet W Whitelaw (27/11) wishes for "another Cromwell" to take over and end our democracy. Cromwell was a ruthless tyrant. As Churchill said, democracy is imperfect, but the alternative is appalling. P145 CEEFAX 1 145 Wed 01 Dec 12:15/32 3/10 GE Sherlock (25/11) and anyone else concerned about banks charging for use of their ATMs have the answer in their own hands (or wallet). With my Delta card I withdraw all my cash requirements from my local supermarket when doing my shopping. P145 CEEFAX 1 145 Wed 01 Dec 12:11/14 4/10 When is someone going to sort out the archaic age laws? I took my son, who is 17 and 6ft 2" tall, into a pub. He only drinks soft drinks. We were refused. The barman said he was too young. He joins the Army in January 2000. He can fight in a war, win millions on the lottery, smoke... but cannot go in a pub for a coke, even with his parents. How Europe must laugh at us! WJ Blundell, London Headlines 101Latest 150Sport 300Features 540TV 600Weather 400Quotes News Indx Extra Main menu
P145 CEEFAX 1 145 Wed 01 Dec 12:12/31 5/10 If the Government is serious about "Rip-off-Britain", it should investigate the large annual hikes in Council Tax. With inflation below 2.5%, what justification can there be for a 7%-10% increase? It is certainly not to improve services as, despite all the extra money, councils still plead poverty and cut services. Labour and Tory authorities are both guilty. P145 CEEFAX 1 145 Wed 01 Dec 12:12/44 6/10 After viewing "MacIntyre Undercover" when it looked at the fashion industry, I would pose the question: Do the parents of these children (for that is what they are) realise that they are stealing their childhood to feed the sexual appetites of those sordid people involvd in the fashion industry and the attendant drug pushers? P145 CEEFAX 1 145 Wed 01 Dec 12:17/19 7/10 Michael Portillo's return to Parliament will be of far greater concern to William Hague than Tony Blair. Portillo's announcement that Michael Ashcroft must go - in direct contravention of Hague's support for the Tory treasurer - is an early indication of his intention to stamp his authority on the party. When Anne Widdecombe has been hailed as the "brightest star in the Tory heavens", it is patently obvious there is not much to beat. P145 CEEFAX 1 145 Wed 01 Dec 12:17/41 8/10 Again we see the same old arguments trotted out on gun control (R Kiffen, 26/11). The facts are that gun control does little to stop the criminal use of firearms. Handgun crime in Britain is out of control despite the ban, 250 incidents per month according to Hansard and witness the terrible murder of Jill Dando. In the US, the places with gun control have the highest crime rate with guns (New York, Chicago, DC). The same story in Australia. Still, don't let facts ruin a good story. P145 CEEFAX 1 145 Wed 01 Dec 12:18/07 9/10 A few days ago I tuned in by chance to Hippies. I was dismayed to realise the BBC had sunk so low as to produce and broadcast such extremely tasteless material. I did persevere to see if it had any redeeming features but it got worse. I shall not watch it again. Popularity is no criteria because there will sadly always be a market for such tastes but such is well catered for elsewhere and our licence money should be spent more constructively. P145 CEEFAX 1 145 Wed 01 Dec 12:14/11 10/10 Whilst I agree with Joe Stevens (29/11) that TV programmes are quite often mindless rubbish, I would also like to remind him and all the others who moan about it, of the amazing device called the off button. One does not have to watch TV. If one does not like what is on, then one is fully within one's rights to switch it off. I find it quite funny to think of the level society has reached where the only thing available to moan about is the standard of television.
