Torrance played for the European team eight times and sank the winning putt in the 1985 event, also at The Belfry. He was one of the assistants to Mark James during the defeat to the United States at Brookline in September. One of his first jobs will be to deal with the problems of sportsmanship which erupted when the Americans celebrated their success this year. His first Tour victory came in 1976 when he won the Piccadilly Medal. He has won 21 times on the European Tour and 31 times worldwide. The Scotsman has played in a record 624 European Tour events but has never won a major. He was made an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours in 1996. "I've never made a secret of how much I enjoy being part of the Ryder Cup and to be the captain makes me feel very proud," he said. "It is a challenge, as well as a great responsibility, to be Europe's captain. "It makes it extra special to be the first person to lead the team against the Americans in the new millennium," he added.
