Three boys from a small village in Wales playing in front of 50,000 peers at Swansea's long-lost Morfa Stadium. With 21 songs including The Bartender And The Thief, Sunny Afternoon and Local Boy in the Photograph, dressing room banter, untrashed hotel rooms and discussions about pasta and broccoli. As stocking-fillers go, this little beauty is Phonically unchallenged. ——————— review by Chris Charles ———————Film 99 550Music 560 TV/Radio 600Top Film 553Index 541 Showbiz 540Film99 Lottery Main menu Sport
P549 CEEFAX 1 549 Wed 01 Dec 12:11/41 2/5 TO RENT LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL (PG) 117 mins A tragi-comedy in which an Italian Jew invents an imaginary world in order to shield his young son, Giosue, from the horrors of a Nazi concentration camp. Roberto Benigni won the Best Actor Oscar for his enchanting performance as the clown-like Guido whose romance with schoolteacher Dora (Nicoletta Braschi) dominates the first half of the film. But as WW2 closes in, Guido's fairytale existence gives way to the stark horror of a German labour camp and he is forced to fall back on a world of fantasy to protect those he loves. P549 CEEFAX 1 549 Wed 01 Dec 12:12/01 3/5 TO RENT APT PUPIL (15) 107 mins Bright high school student Todd Bowden (Brad Renfro) susses that neighbour Arthur Denker (Ian McKellen) is actually a former SS Officer in hiding. However, instead of alerting the authorities, Bowden blackmails Denker into relating concentration camp atrocities. But it's a dangerous game. A psychological battle commences with director Bryan Singer drawing maximum impact from McKellen's menacing monologues to create a verbal horror movie that is bleak and challenging. P549 CEEFAX 1 549 Wed 01 Dec 12:12/24 4/5 TO RENT TWIN DRAGONS (15) 80 mins A curiously lame and uninspired martial arts comedy about twin brothers separated at birth and brought up in very different worlds. Jackie Chan plays a celebrated concert pianist John Ma who bumps into his long-lost twin and dodgy mechanic, Boomer (Chan again) while touring with his orchestra in China. A predictable comedy of mistaken identities and culture clashes ensues, but it is amateurish in style and lacks the charm of Chan's more recent hits.
