One minute he's treading the boards at working men's clubs, the next he's rubbing shoulders with some of the biggest names in music. But Terry was destined to be a performer, it seems. After a string of jobs from rookie goalie at Southend Utd to working in a battery factory, he found his feet with stand-up. His recent Edinburgh Fringe Festival show was Perrier nominated — and he hasn't looked back since. RED ALERT — Saturdays, BBC1, 7.10pm Soap Suds Showbiz Movies Showbiz

Steptoe and Son. They were one of the great double acts as I was growing up. There were some classic situations and great one-liners and they also had some amazing facial expressions. I love physical comedy and they were experts. I also have a soft spot for Bagpuss, because my first ever stand-up comedy gig was a routine based on that show. How many TVs do you own? Emma Chambers who plays Alice in the Vicar of Dibley. She's very natural and plays the role in a believably stupid way. Who is your favourite soap character? I love Fred Elliott in Corrie (John Savident) — the way he keeps repeating himself. And I do like the guy who plays Les Battersby (Bruce Jones). He is so bad he is great. I never like to miss an episode of Songs of Praise. No, I'm joking! I like undercover programmes, stuff that is filmed without people knowing it. I found MacIntyre Undercover (BBC1) fascinating. I watched the first one where he infiltrated the soccer thugs. He was funny because he just didn't fit in as a real lad, but you've got to admire his bravery — to get involved with something like that. There are so many, but if I had to be stranded on a desert island with just one set of tapes, I guess it would be Only Fools and Horses. I can relate to it. It's totally believable and while we might not all know a character like a full-on Del Boy, I think we've all come across the odd ducking and diving character like that. The strangest gig I ever did was in a pub in Banbury. I don't know where they got that audience from but there were some REALLY REALLY strange people. What's the first thing you'd do if you were PM? I'd campaign to get a bit of respect back into the country. Get people to say please and thank you and to smile. I'd also tackle education. Improving education is the key to improving the nation. I'd also like to educate against racism. The sooner we can kick that into touch the better. RED ALERT — Saturdays, BBC1, 7.10pm TV News 591 Cookbook 580 Index 540 Soap Suds Showbiz Movies Showbiz

I'd love to pack out the Palladium in a TV special. I was offered the lead in the TV version of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels but had to turn it down to do Red Alert. I like to think whatever I'm doing at the moment is my dream job. Tell you what though — my mum would love to play Mr Blobby. I think it would just give her a good excuse to give us a wallop and get away with it. What do you like best about Red Alert? Everything.
