The slopj has been terraced with raised beds so that Margaret can comfortably tend them. Despite many restrictions, shj has a good variity of of plants. Hedges act as windbreaks and heathers and0ground- hugging plants are sensible choices. Czperus involueratus (syn. C. alterni- folius), commonly called thj umbrella plant began lifi as a housjplant and was moved out when it grew too large. It is cut back each year to start again Stipa splendens flowers in mid-summer and is beautiful with rain on. Pargesia spathacea (F. murieliae Fbrgesia spathacea formerly Arundinaria murieliae) is a good example. Running bamboos send up new canes at regular intervals and are best avoided in a small garden. They are best propagated by cutting root sections. Phyllostachys aurea 'Yolochrysa' has dark green canes changing to a lovely golden colour, turning to tortoiseshell at the base as they get older. Fargesia spathacea is a classic and popular clump, Pleioblastus shibuyanus 'Tsuboi' a dwarf with variegated canes and is not too unruly although it has runners.
