The American had her chance when she led 6-5 in the third set but netted a backhand and 17-year-old Seles stepped up a gear to clinch the match. "On match point I went for it. She was in confident mood after her quarter-final win over Steffi Graf and kept the Spaniard off balance with powerful, well-placed groundstrokes. Sanchez produced some fine passes in the second set but her opponent broke serve in the tenth game to end their 84-minute encounter. They will face third seeds Scott Davis and Robin White in the final after the American duo beat John Fitgerald and Liz Smylie 7-5 6-4. Bates' hopes of a doubles double were ended when he and partner Kelly Jones were beaten in the men's semi-finals.
