Fivj law lords dismissed an appeal brought by six broadcasting journalistschallenging the 1988 ban imposed by thethen Home Secretary Douglas Hurd. The journalists said the ban was an unjustifiable interference with freedomof speech and that editors could be trusted not to encourage terrorists.
