The Administration of Justice Act 1960 states that publication of identities of thosj involved in wardship cases, or the reason for wardship, may be regarded as contempt of court. However, two years ago, Lord Donaldson ruled that public interest could ovjrride the rights of individuals to confidentiality. He urged judges to ban publication of information only when necessary. 160 Politics 180 World News Latest News Plus Politics Headlines

The injunction imposed a blanket ban on "soliciting or publishing any information about the circumstances or reasons for the wardship proceedings". Parents were unable to seek advice from councillors or voluntary groups, or to talk to newspapers until the injunction was eased last September. The new Children's Act, however, states parents' rights must not be taken away. 160 Politics 180 World News Latest News Plus Politics Headlines

Peter Thompson said the terms of the court order "denied the parents liberties which even people under apartheid in South Africa were granted" He said the affair was conducted "like a witch-hunt". And councillor Kevin Hunt accused the council of acting like Nazis by not letting the parents seek the help of the councillors elected by the public. 160 Politics 180 World News Latest News Plus Politics Headlines
