P385 CEEFAX 385 Thu 21 Mar 21:07/17  JAPAN  GP  1/5  World champion Wayne Rainey and the Rothmans Honda pair of Michael Doohan and Wayne Gardner are tipped as the 500cc riders to watch this weekend. The 15-round World Championship series opens on the demanding 3.69-mile Suzuka circuit and pre-season testing times point to a tremendous battle in store. Australians Doohan and Gardner have been pleased with their machines while Californian Rainey has been in sparkling form on the Marlboro Yamaha. Many believe he could go even better this season on his new NSR Rothmans Honda but he insists: "I'm not getting too optimistic just because we've had a good run. Others have also gone well." The Californian will not be looking for a rostrum place for the four-cylinder bike this time but no-one will expect him to stay out of the running for long Championship runner-up Kevin Schwantz will be chasing a third Suzuka victory and is joined by new Suzuki team-mate Belgian Didier de Radigues. The former 125cc world champion, winner of the 1990 Japanese GP on a Marlboro Yamaha, said he was now used to his new bike. "I'm sure it's consistency that will win the title this season" he said The 250cc Championship is certain to be keenly contested with last year's runner-up Carlos Cardus, Helmut Bradl and Wilco Zeelenberg among the line-up.
