Jonathan Kawabata, 19, from Carmarthen and Karen Jenkins, 22, of Treflach, were killed when their Ford Escort crashed into a parked heavy lorry in a lay-by on the A48 at Nantycaws Hill. There were 30 accidents around Carmarthen this morning. Dyfed highways officials said although roads were not gritted, everything possible was done. The Welsh Office announced £44 million of aid to communities hit by pit job losses when the closure of Taff Merthyr, Betws and Point of Ayr was announced last October. However, only 10 per cent of that money has gone to the Taff Merthyr area, even though Point of Ayr has been reprieved and private buyers want to take over Betws. Unemployed Robert David Griffiths, who lived at Hawarden Road, Colwyn Bay, was alleged to have killed Kenneth McAllister, 42. His body was found at his bedsit in the town on Wednesday. Mr Justice Scott Baker, who sentenced Swansea car dealer John Healy to three months for theft, was told the city was second only to Newcastle for auto crime.
