Michael Howard was announcing new Home Office guidance on powers for courts to force offenders to pay compensation to their victims. These include a rise in the maximum compensation which can be ordered from £2,000 to £5,000. Compensation showed victims that their interests were being taken into account, Mr Howard said. P133 CEEFAX 133 Fri 26 Nov 16:22/22 2/2 POLITICS MOVE TO HELP VICTIMS OF CRIME Home Secretary Michael Howard has said for the first time courts will be able to issue compensation orders for anxiety and distress. The new tariffs for compensation orders range from sums of £50 for a graze to £5,000 for a facial scar. The new guidance for court powers also include the right to deduct compensation order payments from social security benefits. They revise the rules for seeking victims' views before sentence.
