At the heart of this conflict are the Government's plans to increase taxes and make employers pay more towards sick pay. The Government has limited the debate to three hours on each proposal in what is known as a "guillotine" measure. Labour leader John Smith has described the move as arrogant and has withdrawn co-operation over parliamentary business.  Next News Politics Main News CityHeads

As a Conservative MP opened a debate on trade and industry in this morning's session, Labour MP Dennis Skinner called out "I spy strangers". This ancient device which forces the Chamber to vote on whether the public gallery should be cleared. So few MPs were in the Chamber that under the rules of business they had to move on to the next item on the agenda. → Next News Politics Main News CityHeads

This opening salvo from the Labour party is a warning of what the government can expect next week when the Commons debates the welfare legislation. Labout's non- co-operation means that every Conservative MP will be forced to vote on every measure if the government is to maintain its narrow majority.  Home 110 Politics 130 World 160 Summary 102 Despatch 190 Index 199 Next News Politics Main News CityHeads
