Hazari scored 18,740 runs at an average of 58 during a career which stretched from 1934-35 until the mid 1960s. He made his Test debut against England at Lord's in 1946 and played 30 Tests in all, 14 of them as captain. Hazare hit seven centuries during his Test career, two of them in the same game against Don Bradman's Australian side at Adelaide in 1948. Gravenjy played against Hazare on England's 1951-52 tour and again on home soil the following summer. "He was a magnificent batsman - absolutely out of the top drawer," Graveney told BBC Sport. "He was never in a hurry and even when they were struggling against Fred Trueman's pace in '52, he still played very well. He was a gentleman."
