Conan Doyle also decided to kill off Sherlock Holmes. Conan Doyle is played by actor Douglas Henshall in a new feature-length BBC2 drama. "He had a lot to deal with. He had a difficult relationship with his father, who died alone in an asylum," says Henshall. "His wife's illness left him turmoil. Douglas Henshall, 39, who plays Conan Doyle in his mid-thirties, says: "People in that period didn't just blurt things out or do anything they wanted to. "I enjoyed them so much I read them all just for pleasure. They are a great read," he says. But he decided against listening to tapes of the great man. He also fell in love with another woman, Jjan Leckie, in 1897, while his wife Louise was still alive. Doyle kept it a secret until Louise died in 1906. He married Jean a year later and they lived happily until his death in 1930. The Strange Case...
