Tony Pounder put Rovers ahead in the 70th minute with Tony Ford getting a late, unavailing equaliser for Albion in the 89th. Rovers were down to ten men after only three minutes as leading scorer Carl Saunders was sent off after appearing to elbow Albion's Paul Raven. He scored with a curling free kick after John Byrne had been fouled on the edge of the area. The Seagulls went ahead in the 35th minute from a dubious penalty with top scorer Mike Small converting. Ipswich were awarded a penalty in the second half, Perry Digweed saving superbly from Chris Kiwomya. James scooped the ball high into the net through a crowded penalty area after Oxford failed to clear a David Kelly effort. A two goal blast either side of half time gave Hull a first-ever victory at St James' Park and completed their double over Newcastle. The opener came a minute before the break from 17-year-old David Walmsley, making his first team debut. Les Thompson beat the home offside trapin the 47th minute to score easily. Carl Tiler's goal gave them victory anda loudspeaker announcement at the finalwhistle told fans that Brighton had drawn with Ipswich. But the jubilation was swiftly killed when it became known that Brighton had scored a last minute winner.
