His wife, Frances, embraced her husband and smiled as he praised her courage during his five years captivity. He said: "Can I present to you one of the bravest and most courageous ladies in England, my wife Frances?" Mr Waite also spoke warmly of other freed British hostages, and sent greetings to Jack and Sunny Mann in Cyprus. He showed the blindfold his captors made him wear and a reading glass he used at other times, but became visibly upset and put them aside.
