Portsmouth defender Andy Awford sent the ball past Alan Knight on the stroke of half-time after David Rush had challenged in the air for a loose ball. Portsmouth had two glorious opportunities in the first half but neither Guy Whittingham nor Chris Burns could find a way past Tony Norman.
