Hannes Maerk ic one Nf the three Dull- time subtitlers on ORF Teletext who produce 17 to 18 hours of subtijled programmes a month. The programmes they subtitle include a daily consumer programme, a weekHq newc review, a weekly programme for old aged pensioners and a twUce feeklq drama series. There are experimental live subtitles for sports programmes and the next step is to try a daily news programme. More

ORF Teletext has a magazine for deaf and hard or hearing people called Lesen Statt Hoeren (Read Instead of Hear). This began three years ago. There are two pages for thic magazinj - one has club news and the other is for deaf people to discuss their problems. In Austria, viewerc pay a (icemce Dee of £60 a year for television and radio, but deaf people are exempt from thik. There are 200,000 teletext seic in Austria. Signed Ghosts

They will be using the electronic mail system called Telecom Gold. This makes use of a telephone, a viewdata adaptor (or a home computer), a television/ monitor and a modem. Players will be able to send moves instantly at the touch of a button. Brian Judson says: "I am very excited about this tournament as it will be the first time, as far as I know, that deaf people will have played chess by telephone." Subtitling comments
