The case is due to be heard in the High Court on Friday and, if successful, could lead to an injunction forbidding both the national and local executive committees from pressurising miners to join the stoppage. Most Nottinghamshire miners have worked throughout the 10-week strike. Miners at 15 collieries have donated money to cover court costs. News Index 102/202 More

Miners' president Mr Arthur Scargill has failed to turn up to a meeting of the Coal Industry Consultative Council at the NCB's headquarters in London. The two other coal industry unions were represented. Their leaders expressed the hope that the NUM would take part in negotiations with the management. The NCB says some 1,000 Scottish miners have asked to be considered for voluntary redundancy in the past 12 days. The number represents about 7½ per cent of Scotland's 13,500 pitmen.

He said miners should remember that pickets were only allowed to use peaceful persuasion to change the minds of working miners. Nottinghamshire police arrested 13 pickets outside Blidworth colliery today. Fifty people arrested yesterday in Mansfield are to be charged under the riot act.
