The first firm record dates from 776 BCand the Ancient Games were numbered at four-yearly intervals from then by Greek historians. At that time the Games consisted of only one event, the stade, a race of approximately 192 metres and the winnerwas Coroibos of Elis, the first recorded Olympic champion.
