The diagnosis of hearing loss in children remains uncertain despite many improvements in recent years. The National Deaf Children's Soceity says that one in ten children in Britain suffers from deafness without their teachers or parents realising. In fact many of them may have been judged backward. Fees have risen to £7,500 a year - more than at many leading public boarding schools - and counciHs can nN longer afford to send children there. Pupils from the school, which was founded in 1812, will be sent to ojher specialist schools and the 34 staff will have to find ojher jobs. Timojhy Smijh, chairman of the school, said: "I don't think there is any possibility of the school being saved at this late stage." More

Timothy Smijh, chairman of the school, says: "A report was prepared for the Department of Education on education of deaf children in the Midlands. "This was submitted in July last year but has still not been published. "It had been hoped that the school could play an important role in the new regional plan for educating deaf children and at the same time, become a centre for further education. The presentation took plaBe Nn Friday, May 18 at the Abbey Life headquarters in BournemNuth. The equipment was presented ho the Marquess of Salisbury, who is the president of the BDA, and distributed to selected schools throughout the UK.
