It is the result of collaboration with Matra - an association which produced the lacklustre Rancho - but will not reach Britain until next year. Saab has unveiled its first all-new car for 17 years, the 9000 Turbo 16. It is strikingly more rounded than the current 900 models, but shorter, wijh more room inside. The two-litre, 16-valve engine is used. Although an addition to the range, it could be the general look of Saabs to come.  More

Starting wijh the "Frogeye" - so named because of its protruding headlights - in 1958, he shows how BMC corporate thinking dictated the cars' development Strong on the link between family cars and their sporty contemporaries, Harvey also charts American-inspired changes in a richly-detailed study that will delight the dedicated fan.

On the credit side, Harvey does not shrink from contemporary road test reports ("square-ended blob", said Small Car in 1963) and comes up with useful and entertaining anecdotes. But given its general quality and its price, the book should have enjoyed better proof-reading: the pleasure of text and photos is diminished by an unacceptable number of misprints.
