It is thought about 1,000 Sikhs deserted in eight separate incidents after the storming last week of the Golden Temple in Amritsar. Reports say 55 peoale - most Nf them deserters - have been killed in clasheswith loyal troops or pNlice. A general has said that any soldiers found guilty of desertion will be hanged.
