(Dave, Rotherham) I'm not sure there is any necessary link between flag and shirt colour (Slovenia, Germany, Holland, but Italy wear blue because it is the colour of the house of Savoia, which ruled Italy from 1861 to 1946. The Savoia coat of arms appeared on the Italian flag until 1946 when the Italian Republic was established. ——————————————————————————————————1/7—— Email: theref@teletext.co.uk PREMIERSHIP INDEX p500 TVSport Sport Prem'ship Holidays

I recall he was always listed as BP Patterson - is that right, and if so, what was his first name? (Jack, Gwent) It is right Jack, and his first name is Balfour. Until his rhythm deserted him he was regarded as the quickest and nastiest of that great crop of Windies quicks. He took 93 Test wickets at 30.90, perhaps never quite reaching the heights suggested by his debut match figures of 7-74 against England. ——————————————————————————————————2/7—— Email: theref@teletext.co.uk PREMIERSHIP INDEX p500 TVSport Sport Prem'ship Holidays

Why did they change to their present red and white stripes? (Mark, Dorset) Rapid were founded in 1923 by workers from the Grivita factories, manufacturers of railway engines. Sick of their strips becoming dirty in the smoky atmosphere in which they played, the club added another colour. One of the workers' wives had some cherry- coloured material, and so the famous cherry and white shirts were born. ——————————————————————————————————3/7—— Email: theref@teletext.co.uk PREMIERSHIP INDEX p500 TVSport Sport Prem'ship Holidays

(Colin, Glasgow) Yes it is, Colin. The Albanian dictator Enver Hoxha had banned beards because he thought they were a way for Western spies to disguise themselves and McGrain had to get special dispensation. Partizan won 1-0 in Tirana, but Celtic turned them over 4-1 in the second leg. ——————————————————————————————————4/7—— Email: theref@teletext.co.uk PREMIERSHIP INDEX p500 TVSport Sport Prem'ship Holidays

Can you help me shut him up by telling me when? (Caroline, Liverpool) Your dad is a bit of a wag. I'm fairly confident the three never played each other in the same season, but Dublin and Bristol played each other every year from 1908-12. Dublin and Liverpool met each other every season from 1920- 1923. All three are teams playing in the Uruguayan first division! ——————————————————————————————————5/7—— Email: theref@teletext.co.uk PREMIERSHIP INDEX p500 TVSport Sport Prem'ship Holidays

(Phil, Ely) It stems from his days at Silkeborg, Phil, when he turned up for a training session in a misguided pair of dungarees. Footballers being the merciless teases they are, he was immediately christened 'Carpenter' as they were seen as being carpenter's trousers. Although he never wore the offending dungarees again, the name stuck. ——————————————————————————————————7/7—— Email: theref@teletext.co.uk PREMIERSHIP INDEX p500 TVSport Sport Prem'ship Holidays
