P452 Teletext 452 Jan26 22:27:48 THEATRE REVIEW —————————————— ———————————— RICHARD III, Savoy Theatre, Strand. 0171 836 8888. Listing on Teletext p455 For longer than I care to remember, I have been saying that what the RSC lacks is the old star power which once dominated the repertoire. But, it will seem churlish that now it has a major box office name in Robert Lindsay as Richard III, that doesn't solve the problem either. Instead of many stars in one production we have just one who gets to chew up the scenery as we all stop and admire. ——————————————————————————————————1/4——by Sheridan Morley TICKETMASTER 24HR CREDIT CARD HOTLINE0990 34 44 44 FOR YOUR THEATRE NEEDS W End A-G W End H-N W End O-Z TV Plus
P452 Teletext 452 Jan26 22:18:21 THEATRE REVIEW —————————————— ———————————— RICHARD III, Savoy Theatre, Strand. 0171 836 8888. Listing on Teletext p455 This was evidently built for a road tour and then the West End, rather than the RSC's Barbican home, but that does not explain the heavy textual cuts. The cuts give Richard III (Robert Lindsay) even more time centre stage. Lindsay declines to play scenes with other actors, in the style of Sir Donald of the '40s. Instead, he smirks at the audience like a Vaudeville comic new to the classics.——————————————————————————————————2/4——Is Starlight Express to close? 451TICKETMASTER 24HR CREDIT CARD H/TLINE0990 34 44 44 FOR YOUR THEATRE NEEDS W End A-G W End H-N W End O-Z TV Plus
P452 Teletext 452 Jan26 22:17:22 THEATRE REVIEW —————————————— ———————————— RICHARD III, Savoy Theatre, Strand. 0171 836 8888. Listing on Teletext p455 If Lindsay's performance is reminiscent of anyone's, it is not Olivier or Sher but the old cowardly lion himself, Bert Lahr, when he replaced The Wizard Of Oz with Samuel Beckett. Every light joke is underlined, as if theatregoers have left their brains with their coats in the cloakroom. The production is fatally flawed and devoid of two things that the play is about - history and power. ——————————————————————————————————3/4—— Is Miss Saigon set to close? 451FULL GUIDE TO NATIONAL EVENTS p441
P452 Teletext 452 Jan26 22:28:42 THEATRE REVIEW —————————————— ———————————— RICHARD III, Savoy Theatre, Strand. 0171 836 8888. Listing on Teletext p455 Denied the prequels of this great history cycle about an age of kings, we get no sense of where Richard is coming from, or why. And because he seems to regard his mass murders as a pathetic joke, we, too, fail to take them seriously. He has lost his kingdom, not so much for want of a horse as for a hoarse cry of isolated stardom run riot. Sad, as Lindsay is one of our best actors. ——————————————————————————————————4/4——Is Dr Dolittle about to close? 451 0990 34 44 44 (national call rate)
