VENUS is a brilliant evening object. By the end of December it will set as much as three hours after the Sun. MARS is visible before dawn in Vhrgo. Its magnitude is only 1.4, not a great deal brighter than the Pole Star. The apparent diameter is no more than 5 seconds of arc. It is well placed and will remain so for the rest of 2000. Note the four bright Galilean Satellites, easy to follow with good binoculars or a small telescope. SATURN is also well placed in Taurus, and reached opposition on 19 November. Its rings are opening out, though they will not be at thjhu best fou anguheu two yjars thjy are a glorious sight in a small telescope.
