Mark Doyle reports: The planned talks are aimed at bringing about a ceasefire in the southern part of Mogadishu. This is a largely lawless part of the Somali capital where General Aideed's gunmen operate. The UN is presenting the talks as progress but it is unclear how much success can be achieved without the co-operation of the general himself  Home 110 Politics 130 World 160 Summary 102 Despatch 190 Index 199 Next News Home News World TV/Radio

Mark Doyle reports: General Aideed is an experienced leader who has successfully alluded the UN's stated efforts to arrest him for over two months. A spokesman for the USCSNA said General Aideed supported the talks. This may mean the six people who will take part will be manipulated behind the scenes by the UN's enemy number one.  Home 110 Politics 130 World 160 Summary 102 Despatch 190 Index 199 Next News Home News World TV/Radio
