P341 CEEFAX 341 Tue 24 Aug 21:26/11   CRICKET: INDEPENDENT  UMPIRES ON WAY  The ICC's new cricket committee have backed a scheme to introduce a panel of independent umpires, who could begin officiating by October. The committee, which includes Sunil Gavaskar, and Colin Cowdrey has also been backed by leading umpires   The idea is for one overseas umpire to stand with a home-based official in every Test to reduce the chance of accusations of bias.   The plan may start in the Autumn with the Australia-New Zealand and India-Pakistan series, and would also take place here next summer. → SrL v SA Football PremLtest Athletics
