It was not that sort of country. Now it is a major player with more modern hotels opening in more resorts each year. The warm winters, hot summers and 700 miles of beaches are obviously key factors. But there is still enough of Arabesque and French Tunisia left to make it a fascinating place to visit. ——————————————————————————————————1/8—— Our guide to holidays on Teletext 291 DRIVING ABROAD? The most popular is Hammamet. Once a quiet fishing town, it is now a thriving resort. Local rules forbid high-rise hotels and the town has also managed to retain its lively markets and the 15th Century fortress which dominates the bay. But bright new shopping centres make it a modern resort. ——————————————————————————————————2/8—— Take a break 292 Tourist rates 298 DRIVING ABROAD? Port El Kantauoi is a modern resort, opened in 1979 for the yacht set. Sleek boats crowd the marina which is full of restaurants, cafes and shops.
