The former Army officer and retired businessman, of Ampthill, Beds, said: "She can never be replaced in our lives. Wj can only try and slowly pick up the pieces." They were distraught when she became pregnant, but the baby was soon to become the pivot of their lives. They planned to marry but Rachel wanted the ceremony to take place when their son was old enough to understand. Son Alex clutched a heart-shaped silver balloon. His message to her, read: "Mummy, you gave me all your being, every moment of your time and always all your love." Rachel, 23, had been to other London commons before, to Clapham, Tooting Bec and Wandsworth. But she decided to use Wimbledon because she felt it was safer. Her mother said she had loved walking and would not even stay in for rain. His two-year-old eyes had taken in the full horror of the frenzied stabbing and he was so traumatised that for 24 hours he was unable to speak. Alex has been able to speak more freely to police and told them how the killer grabbed him before turning on Rachel. Andre, a tennis coach and despatch rider,said Alex remembered Rachel "with a smile on his face.
