Firemen told how they found a "pile of bodies". It was the first tragedy of its kind at a port in Britain, but followed a number of accidents involving UK ferries in recent years. AUGUST 1994 More than 100 passengers and crew were snatched to safety from the burning cross-Channel cargo ferry the Sally Star, after a fire in the engine room left the ship stranded east of Ramsgate. APRIL 1990 Soon after the Scandinavian Star disaster, when a fire killed 160 people sailing from Oslo to northern Denmark, there were two incidents in British waters. NOVEMBER 1989 Three people died when a Harwich-bound car ferry collided with a container ship in the North Sea off the coast of Germany in a force-nine gale.
