The characterisation is rich, the story is lively and full of exciting incident and, like all the best fairy tales, the entertainment contains a telling moral. "When You Wish Upon a Star" rightly won the Academy Award for Best Song and has now become a signature tune for Disney. More farcical than believable, the wild affair is given brisk direction by Paul Mazursky who takes every opportunity he gets to fire off acid satirical arrows. Delightfully acted by Nolte, Midler and Richard Dreyfuss, it's not their fault Nolte's dog Mike steals the whole show.
