Earlier, Deputy Premier Sir Geoffrey Howe, standing in for Mrs Thatcher, defended the Chancellor's tactics. He insisted that the battle against inflation was far more important than the "immediate short-term consequences of paying high interest rates". Mr Howe ruled out any change in policy over joining the exchange mechanism of the European Monetary System.
