P106 ORACLE 106 Tue24 Oct ITV 1945:12 KRENZ SURVIVES REVOLT TO BECOME NEW LEADER Communist Party leader Egon Krenz survived a parliamentary revolt to become East German head of state and then pledged changes to defuse unrest. Twenty-six of the 500 legislators voted against Mr Krenz and 26 abstained but he was voted in to replace Mr Erich Honecker, who quit on October 18. Mr Krenz was also elected chairman of the National Defence Council. About 7,000 people marched through East Berlin denouncing the new leader in defiance of a strong warning from Mr Krenz against street demonstrations.
