Jane Peel reports: For the past five years, the Attorney-General has had the power to refer sentences considered unduly lenient to the Appeals Court It is then up to the Court of Appeal judges to decide whether to impose a harsher sentence. But the power has so far existed only for the most serious offences which are tried in the Crown Courts These include arson and rape.  Home 110 Politics 130 World 160 Next News Main News Newsround TV/Radio

Jane Peel reports: Last August a row broke when it became clear there was no power to increase a three-year probation order on a man guilty of indecently assaulting a nine-year-old girl. The Home Secretary, Michael Howard, said that from 1 March, the power of review would be extended. In future it will take in offences of indecent assault, cruelty to children and making threats to kill, in cases where the defendant has been sentenced in Crown Courts.  Next News Main News Newsround TV/Radio
