P204 CEEFAX 204 Thu 13 Jan 21:11/27    US RETAIL SALES  ADVANCE BY 0.8%  News of an unexpectedly sharp rise in US retail sales suggests fourth- quarter growth outran expectations. Sales rose by 0.8% in December, or by 0.7% after excluding motor cars. Economists were predicting gains of 0.3% and 0.4% respectively.
