Sales rose by 0.8% in December, or by 0.7% after excluding motor cars. Economists were predicting gains of 0.3% and 0.4% respectively. For all of 1993, sales rose by 6.2% - the biggest increase since 1989. * Consumer prices rose by 0.2% (and non-food-and-energy prices by 0.3%) in December and in 1993 as a whole by 2.7% (and 3.2%) - the smallest annual rises since 1986 (and 1972).
