P724 CEEFAX 724 Thu 13 Jan 21:11/12 1/4 LIFELINE TO THE LIFEBOAT SERVICE New figures from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution show that volunteer lifeboat men and women saved 1,155 lives in 1993. Between them the volunteers spent 8000 hours at sea, often (31 per cent of the time) working in part or total darkness and in many instances battling against gales of Force 8 and over. More than half of their 4,935 rescue operations were to pleasure boats such as dingies and yachts. Contacts: page 729

Its 24-hour emergency service covers the coastline of the British Isles, and up to 50 miles out from the shore. Apart from the mechanic, lifeboat crews comprise trained volunteers from all walks of life - all are skilled, energetic and, as members of local coastal communities, interested in the sea. P724 CEEFAX 724 Thu 13 Jan 21:43/29 3/4 LIFELINE TO THE LIFEBOAT SERVICE Lifeboat volunteers are able, active people, who are willing to meet cold, wet conditions, fatigue and danger out at sea. Whatever the weather, whatever the hour, distress calls are always answered - but the crews rely entirely on public support. The RNLI operates a fleet of about 272 lifeboats with 100 more in reserve - all are modern sophisticated vessels costing hundreds of thousands of pounds. Contacts: page 729
P724 CEEFAX 724 Thu 13 Jan 21:12/25 4/4 LIFELINE TO THE LIFEBOAT SERVICE The RNLI estimates that in 1994 it will cost around £56 million to run the lifeboat service - all raised from voluntary contributions. You can help the RNLI by contributing yourself, or by becoming a member of your local branch or guild. You might also like to join the RNLI membership scheme - and anyone under 16 interested in the lifeboat service can join the special "Storm Force" club. Contacts: page 729
