The demands, made by Greenpeace and Shetland councillor Dr Wills, come on the first anniversary of the Braer tanker's foundering on rocks on Shetland. Fortunately an environmental disaster was prevented last year as a hurricane cleared away the oil. But Greenpeace and Dr Wills claim that the Government has done little to prevent a repetition. P733 CEEFAX 733 Thu 13 Jan 21:41/14 2/2 STRICTER CONTROLS WANTED ON TANKERS Campaigners acknowledged that their worst fears had not happened last year but said there should be an early warning and rescue system. Such a system would include a coastal radar and a sea-going salvage tug in the area. Environmentalists claim this would cost less than the value of an average cargo of oil.
