An oily tar-like substance has spread over an eight mile by two mile area and has come ashore. The second incident is thought is to have been caused by a tanker illegally flushing its tanks out at sea. The RSPB and coastal guards have been scouring local beaches for injured and sick birds. The horrible sticky substance destroys birds' natural insulation, they become waterlogged and die of exposure unless reached, said Dr Stephanie Tyler of the RSPB. It is the second incident in a week that has affected Britain's coast, on New Year's Day an adhesive oil- based like substance was found off the coast of Lancashire.
