P644 CEEFAX 644 Fri 26 Feb 21:18/30  GARDENERS'  QUESTION TIME  Wilting winter-flowering cinerarias   Tip plants out of pot and look underneath, the problem is probably in roots. Likeliest problem is root rot caused by cold condtions. Check compost, which is very important for cinerarias. P644 CEEFAX 644 Fri 26 Feb 21:20/10  2/8  GARDENERS'  QUESTION TIME  Large bore holes in oak trees:   Probably made by goat moth, which has a fearsome wood boring caterpillar. The moth itself is not too big, and the caterpillar is just a couple of inches long, but is very fat amd makes huge holes in hardwood trees of all kinds. P644 CEEFAX 644 Fri 26 Feb 21:11/47  3/8  GARDENERS'  QUESTION TIME Warty growths on Red Knight Dahlia tubers: Bacterial crown gall is a very common affliction, but is generally harmless, although it may sap smaller plants of goodness. Try raising new plants from seeds in a part of garden that has not had dahlias in before.   Repotting or trimming the roots of crotons: Crotons are tropical houseplants grown for their very lurid mulit- coloured leaves. P644 CEEFAX 644 Fri 26 Feb 21:12/15  4/8  GARDENERS'  QUESTION TIME  Use of soil in bottom of tub water gardens: Using soil is unnecessary and takes up valuable space. Water plants you buy should already be potted into right sort of soil in net pot.   Just lower them into water at correct depth. If you have fish, lower a small bundle of Canadian pondweed which does not need any soil to grow in at all, but will probably root itself into containers with other plants. You can do sterilisation in roasting bags in oven at a very low temperature for a good hour.   Mix it with an ordinary John Innes seed compost before using. Just push them into soil, make sure wisps at top of bulb are showing. Plant 6"-8" apart, under cloches.   Now it is time to sow leeks in a greenhouse or a frame.   Sow peppers and aubergines now. Grow them in same way as tomatoes, but they need to be started earlier as they are slower, Find them a warm spot to germinate at temperatures of 68 or 70 degrees, then lower temperature to 60 or 65 degrees before potting them off. 

Scrape away about a quarter of an inch of the old compost, replace it wih new and give it a good watering.   Hot water plants - achimenes - should be started off now. Plant tubicles half an inch deep in pots of John Innes 3.
