He went to Eton and read engineering at Oxford.   His ambition was to be an architect - one of his grandfathers was Edwin Lutyens - but he joined a civil engineering firm.   He contested Blyth for the Tories in 1955, but was heavily defeated by Alf (later Lord) Robens. He walked out of a TV interview over the issue.
