The fith release of the popular interactive world atlas and reference suite Microsoft Encarta World Atlas released in 2000.

This version builds on the previous edition by adding more up to date information and enhancing the multimedia content.

Editors Thoughts...

I don't find interactive Atlases all that interesting sadly - definitely not those that are more than 10 years old. As with printed atlas books, once they reach a certain age they kind of become worthless due to how out-of-date their information is. The point of an Atlas is to perform research and gather statistical information about a country or continent, or learn about the culture of the area and in some atlases memorable historical events.

The Encarta brand from Microsoft is well known between home and eductional users alike - and is trusted for being a high quality product with useful information. And so, in its day the Microsoft Encarta Interactive World Atlas 2001 would have just been that - a quality product.

Sadly there isn't much to say about interactive atlases. This one still works for the most part, the Internet functionality of the program is for the most part, not working at all anymore (due to the age of the software). I had a little play around with the software (about 15 minutes) and found it cumbersome to use. Maybe its the resolution I am using the software with (1360x768) but everything seemed sluggish, slow to render images and the buttons mostly unrepsonsive and fiddly to use.

Aside from that - it does have some very cool (albeit slightly unusual for the subject matter) start-up music - breakbeat electronic anyone? How 2000.
