P143 Teletext 143 Aug30 21:20:30————— With TV's Eric Knowles ——————————YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Dear Eric, Can you tell me anything about my pair of mottled orange glazed vases? They are both cylindrical, with flared top rims. I have enclosed an additional photograph of the impressed mark which is on the base. P143 Teletext 143 Aug30 21:21:50————— With TV's Eric Knowles ——————————TELL ME MORE ABOUT MY GLAZED VASES Ask anyone interested in old pottery and they will be quite happy to admit that whenever they examine a piece, turning it upside down to examine the base is absolutely essential. The mark on your base is composed of a large letter P that incorporates two small bumble bees above a small letter X. The mark tells me your pair of vases were made by the Pilkington Pottery at Swinton Junction between Manchester and Bolton. ——————————————————————————————————2/7—— Religion on the go 141 NEW GENERATION PHONE? P143 Teletext 143 Aug30 21:17:10————— With TV's Eric Knowles ——————————TELL ME MORE ABOUT MY GLAZED VASES The pottery is probably best known for its huge output of architectural tiles. Pilkington tiles even graced the interior of the ill-fated EMS Titanic. The success of the pottery was largely due to William and Joseph Burton, who joined the pottery during the twilight years of the 19th century. The brothersare emblematic as the two Bs, integral with the large letter P trademark. The letter X indicates the number 10, dating your vases to 1910. ——————————————————————————————————3/7——Ditched after summer? P143 Teletext 143 Aug30 21:21:50————— With TV's Eric Knowles ——————————TELL ME MORE ABOUT MY GLAZED VASES The mottled orange glaze is a type that was retailed as orange vermillion, and is one of an extensive range of colourful effects popularised b9 Pilkington during the first 35 years of the past century. But the pottery is probably better known for its range of iridescent and metallic wares, which proved their mostdesirable output. Their iridescent glazed wares are invariably signed withthe monogram of their decorator. ——————————————————————————————————4/7—— Creamy pork noodles 146BRAND NEW VOICE MESSAGES-ITV1 p385 GP Agony Aunt Connect TV Guide
P143 Teletext 143 Aug30 21:22:19————— With TV's Eric Knowles ——————————TELL ME MORE ABOUT MY GLAZED VASES As glazed wares are invariably signed by their decorators, the same is sometimes true with the colourful range of "monochromes", to which your pair of vases belong. The most prolific decorators of the period were William Salter Mycock, Richard Joyce and Gladys Rodgers. The latter's work tended to concentrateon the "lapis" wares that involved fusing coloured paint-work into the underlying glaze. ——————————————————————————————————5/7—— Agony Aunt: I'm so lonely 145 VISIT PLANET SOUND p160GP Agony Aunt Connect TV Guide
P143 Teletext 143 Aug30 21:14:10————— With TV's Eric Knowles ——————————TELL ME MORE ABOUT MY GLAZED VASES Your pair of vases required the use of uranium oxide to achieve the orange mottle effect, and consequently are probably still very slightly radioactive — but not enough to prove a health hazard. As the pair measure about 12 inches in height, their replacement value would probably be in the region of £250. The great thing about Royal Lancastrian pottery is that it still represents good value for money! ——————————————————————————————————6/7——Antiques with Eric every Friday VISIT PLANET SOUND p160GP Agony Aunt Connect TV Guide
