But its guide, issued jointly with the Building Societies' Association, admits the process of dealing with a lender may not always run smoothly. Shelter policy manager Jim Bennett says low unemployment and a low and stable interest rate environment mean less people have trouble with repayments. "Building societies do not want to repossess people's homes and will do everything they can to reschedule payments," says spokesman Adrian Cotes. Loan before October 2 1995: no help for eight weeks, then 50% of eligible interest for next 18 weeks and 100% thereafter. Mortgages up to £100,000.
